Hi, I'm Alan, founder of Alan's Guitar Shack. I have been playing, building, maintaining, modifying, buying, selling and generally enjoying guitars for over forty years.
I've had over fifty guitars during that time, and after retiring from a business career, I have set up Alan's Guitar Shack to utilise those skills to provide quality guitar care at affordable rates in the Bedfordshire UK area, and also sell selected and beautifully prepared used guitars.
We offer quality guitar care at affordable rates in the Bedfordshire area on a fixed price menu.
Bronze service £25 – Polish, fretboard condition and restring. Recommended annually.
Silver service £50 – The traditional full set up. Deep clean all hardware and electronics. Condition fretboard. Polish frets and spot level up to three frets if required. We usually have a small number of carefully selected and fully prepared instruments for sale via our Reverb shop (link below.)
We specialise in good quality instruments from Fender, Epiphone and PRS SE ranges and our philosophy is simple - buying a used guitar should be pleasure and you should receive an instrument that is everything you hoped it would be.
Sadly, the reality can be different. Electric guitars are complex items, mixing mechanical, electrical and natural wooden components, and it takes time and patience to learn the skills to properly adjust, maintain and care for a instrument. Many people buy them with high hopes of learning to play, but for all sorts of reasons the passion fizzles out and and many used guitars appear on the market neglected, dirty, badly maintained and often priced unrealistically compared to well looked after examples.
But all is not lost, because that is where we come in! Almost any guitar can be saved, and every instrument we sell has been thoroughly refurbished to look, play and sound their best. Our process involves:
"It was an absolute pleasure buying this guitar from Alan. The video showing the refurbishment gave me complete confidence in the purchase and Alan is a polite and friendly guy. Very easy to chat with. The guitar was despatched very quickly and arrived in just a couple of days. The packaging was excellent. The guitar has been set up beautifully and plays like a dream. I highly recommend Alan and his guitars to anyone thinking of making a purchase"

Building up a blinged up HH Tele from Blacktop body, a block inlaid Player series neck and nice set of Iron Gear PAF style humbuckers
This one is not for sale, it is just a wee project build I did as I wanted to explore rewiring a semi hollow and see what I could build out of cheap but decent parts. Based around a gutted and repaired IG 335, but really the upgrades are mostly applicable to any Dot
This one is bit special! A very rare Fender Stratocaster Standard Model 2 Made in in Japan. These are vanishingly rare and were built by Fuji-Gen from March to December 1987 only.
This example is a real period piece. It was owned and played by gentleman who passed away in 2003, and has been stored in its case since. It had clearly been well looked after, with some small chips and dings but very good condition for what was a 16 year old guitar in regular use up to it’s storage. It had been modified in period to run a Koch onboard mid-boost system, hence the two micro switches beside the five way, and it was cased with some home made additional padding. Sadly it had deteriorated in storage, and when I purchased it from the gentleman’s daughter recently it was on the understanding that a restoration was required.
This video documents that entire process, what I achieved with it and a few surprises along the way!
Hi all. Today’s video is a little bit of general discussion about Epiphone semi-hollows, and a direct comparison between an ES335 that I have fully set up and owned for a couple of years, and an other one which I have acquired in brand new ex-factory condition. I show the dramatic differences in set up, and then take the new one through my full new guitars setup process and also install a GFS X-Trem tremolo unit as a cost effective, fully reversible alternative to a Bigsby. Spoiler - I like it! It’s one of my longer videos but it covers a fair amount for ground, so grab a coffee and settle in! POST SCRIPT - I just did a deal on a very rare Midnight Sapphire (ie dark blue) Sheraton, which I have been looking for ages. So contrary to what the video says, both of these ES335s will be for sale. PM me if if interested or check them out on my Reverb Shop.
New stock this week that will go through my full preparation process before sale, plus introducing a very rare 1987 Made in Japan Stratocaster that will require a full restoration
A little bit of history and comparison as I take two early Mexican Stratocasters through a Silver service, and choose which one to keep. There can be only one!

A bit of Tele talk as I add a Fender block inlaid Player series neck and some Fender Classic Gear vintage style tuners to one of my Teles. Why I did it, how I did it, and what it sounds like!
Timelapse video of the full fret dressing process on a Les Paul. If only I could do it this fast - this is an hour's worth of work!
How we brought a customer’s dusty, crusty and rusty 35 year old Squier that he thought was fit for the bin, back to life. As an early Korean S9 serial, completely original and never modified, it was worth the effort and looks and sounds great.
We talk you through all the steps of preparing a Fender Telecaster for sale. It take a lot of work to achieve our high standards!
